Wascomat Washers: The Laundromat Operator's Guide to Gen 6, Gen 7, WLD, WED and WUD

Wascomat is the washer you'll find as a W620 with a knob in a 20-year-old store and as a WLD745 with a Compass Pro display in a fresh retool. One brand name covers three control generations, four current model families and a soap box that confuses every new attendant. This guide sorts all of it by model number, so you can work out what you own, what fits it, and what to buy next.

Who Makes Wascomat

Wascomat and Electrolux Professional washers reach North American laundromats through the same distributor, Laundrylux of Inwood, New York. That company was Bermil Industries until it adopted the Laundrylux trade name in April 2010, and it has carried both brands since, with each machine badged Wascomat or Electrolux depending on the model. Electrolux Professional AB itself was spun off from Electrolux in March 2020. The first Wascomat coin laundromat opened in Manhattan in 1960, and Laundrylux says 40-year-old Wascomat machines are still running today.

The practical effect is that a Wascomat WLD745 and an Electrolux W5180H share the same door family, the same Compass Pro control and the same four-compartment soap box. Gen 6 and Gen 7: What Actually Changed

Operators and parts sites split Wascomat into generations, and the two you'll meet on the floor are Gen 6 and Gen 7. Gen 6 is the W620, W630, W640, W655 and W675 "W" series. The 2007 Wascomat W-series spec sheet lists them with a Classic electromechanical control, 81 G extraction and a four-compartment dispenser. Some Gen 6 machines shipped instead with Compass Control, the digital board that throws three-digit fault codes such as 012 or 017.

Gen 7 is the Compass Pro W720 through W777 ladder, sold today under WLD, WED and WUD names. Extraction rose to 100 G on the WLD sheet, and the control became a single knob with a display. The spec sheets draw no model-year line between the two, so identify a machine by its control and model number, not by its age. Two Wascomat documents disagree on two rows of that table: the Classic service manual prints 15 9/16 in for the W630 and 17 1/8 in for the W640, while the 2007 W-series spec sheet (#096146) prints 14 3/8 in and 15 9/16 in for the same models. Measure the glass before ordering anything sized to the door.

Parts sellers list #240101 as "SOAP-BOX, GEN 6 COMPLETE" and #472995401 as "SOAP-BOX, GEN 6/GEN7 COMPLETE," which tells you the drawer geometry carried over. Drain valves did not carry back: the Gen 6/7 parts collections note they don't fit Gen 4 or Gen 5 machines.

The Current Families: WLD, WED, WUD and WSD

Every current Wascomat coin washer is a front-load washer-extractor with Compass Pro. The letters tell you the mount and the spin force. WLD is the solid-mount 100 G workhorse. WED is the same cabinet at 200 G with Automatic Savings load weighing. WUD is soft-mount at 350 G, which Laundrylux says can be installed on wood floors, upper floors and over basements. WSD is the big-load row at 65, 80 and 135 lb.

A WED at 200 G uses 10.8–43.5 gallons per full load depending on size, per the Laundrylux sheet, and the WED720 spins at 830 rpm against 587 rpm on the WLD720. Door Openings and Capacities by Model

Door opening is the number that decides which fill line label, which door decal and which cart height work on a machine. Wascomat uses the same handful of door diameters across generations, from 12 3/16 in on the smallest W620 to 21 1/16 in on the WSD780 and WSD7135. One warning on the Gen 6 rows. The Classic service manual (doc. 438.9205-85/07) prints the W630 at ø 395 mm/15 9/16 in and the W640 at ø 435 mm/17 1/8 in, but the 2007 W-series spec sheet lists 14 3/8 in and 15 9/16 in for the same two models. Two manufacturer documents, two answers. Measure the clear opening on a W630 or W640 before you order anything sized to the door. Controls: Classic, Compass Control, Compass Pro and Clarus Vibe

Four control systems have shipped on Wascomat coin washers, and each one reads its faults differently. Classic is the electromechanical program unit on the 2007 W-series sheet: fixed programs, a timer, no fault codes to read. Compass Control is the digital board found on some Gen 6 W620–W677 machines; it shows three-digit codes. Compass Pro runs every current WLD, WED, WUD and WSD: one knob, a text display, and a service mode you enter with a long press on that knob. Clarus Vibe is the 7 in color touchscreen Laundrylux announced for the WED 200 G on September 17, 2024, with 10 built-in cycles, 180-plus custom programs and 35 languages.

Compass Pro's service mode is where you change vend prices. The Electrolux user manual lists the branches as SERVICE MENU, FUNCTION TEST, CONFIGURATION, PRICE PROGRAMMING, STATISTICS, PROGRAM PARAMETERS and SYSTEM, and the coin-op program set as COLD, WARM, HOT, QUICK WASH and DELICATE with HEAVY SOIL and EXTRA RINSE options. Error Codes: Which Table Applies to Your Machine

The most common Wascomat search is an error code, and the most common mistake is reading the wrong table. Compass Pro shows the attendant four plain-language codes, printed in the Electrolux Professional user manual.

For anything else, the manual's instruction is to disconnect power for 30 seconds and call authorized service if the code returns. Behind those four sit the numbered service codes, and here the generations diverge. Compass Control on Gen 6 uses a 012–062 list where 012 is a program failure, 013 is no motor communication and 017 is a door lock fault. Compass Pro and Clarus use a 01–41 list where 01 is NO WATER, 02 DOOR OPEN, 03 DOOR LOCK, 13 NO MOTOR COMM and 17 DOOR LOCK SWITCH. Same fault, different number. Motor and inverter subcodes on either generation are board and high-voltage work, so they go to a technician.

The Four-Compartment Soap Box

Wascomat and Electrolux use a pull-out soap box in the front panel, not the top hopper you'd find on a Speed Queen or Dexter. It has four compartments, and the Electrolux Professional manual labels them by function: softener (liquid), main wash (liquid chemicals), pre-wash (powder or liquid detergent) and main wash (powder detergent). The maintenance section tells you to pull out the two siphons and clean them, then flush both compartments. If the softener cup drains slowly, clean that siphon before you suspect a valve.

Customers don't read icons molded into gray plastic, and that is why softener ends up in the main wash cup. Wascomat vs Speed Queen and Huebsch

The comparison most operators actually make is Wascomat against the Alliance twins, Speed Queen and Huebsch. On door openings the brands are close: an Alliance SYT020 20 lb opens at 13.0 in against 12 1/4 in on a WLD720, and the SYT030 30 lb door is 16.14 in against 14 3/8 in on a WLD730 and 15 9/16 in on a WLD745. On extraction, Wascomat's WLD is 100 G and WED is 200 G, with 350 G available in the soft-mount WUD.

Two claims you'll read need context. Laundrylux says its drain valve design leaves 97% less dead water than competitors and that Sanitizing Rinse is the only HACCP-certified program in North America; both are the distributor's own marketing. A Speed Queen dealer's comparison claims a 20% larger cylinder shaft and criticizes a plastic outer tub on Wascomat, which contradicts the 2007 W-series sheet's stainless steel inner and outer drums. Treat that one as disputed. What a Wascomat Costs

Laundrylux does not publish a list price for a single new machine. What it does publish is a bundle: two WLD745 washers for $376.80 per month, with payments deferred 90 days, excluding tax, installation and freight. Dealer refurbished listings show a W620 at $2,079, a W630 at $2,500 and a 2011 W630CC at $2,600. A third-party estimate of $4,000 to $8,000 per machine circulates on dealer blogs, but it is not a quote and should not go in your pro forma. A new EUD-660 price is quote-only.

Budget for bearings on used Gen 6 and Gen 7 machines. Dealer listings show bearing kits at roughly $706 to $1,049, and the job calls for the 098587W tool kit. A refurbished W630 at $2,500 plus a $900 bearing job is still well under a new WLD730 on payments, but only if the outer drum and door lock are sound. Which Wascomat Should You Buy?

If you already run Gen 6 machines that hold water and lock their doors, keep them; the soap box, liners and most consumables still ship, and the control is simple enough to fix. If you're retooling on a concrete slab and payments matter more than dry time, the WLD 100 G row is the default. If your dryers are the bottleneck, step up to WED 200 G, and take Clarus Vibe if you want touchscreen pricing changes. If the store sits on a wood floor, an upper floor or over a basement, only the soft-mount WUD belongs there. If you want 450 G, you're shopping the Electrolux badge, not Wascomat.

Before you order a machine, a label or a liner, do one thing: open the soap box, read the serial plate, and write down the model number and control type. Every part, every decal size and every error-code table flows from those two facts.
