Speed Queen Commercial Washers: The Laundromat Operator's Guide

Speed Queen sells three vended washer platforms to laundromats: cabinet hardmount washer-extractors from 20 to 100 lb, softmount washer-extractors from 20 to 70 lb, and a 22 lb front-load washer. All three run a Quantum control, and all three are quoted by a dealer, not priced on a website. This guide covers what separates the platforms, what the model numbers mean, what the control choice costs you in warranty and features, and what a machine actually sells for, so you can spec a floor without leaving the decisions to the dealer.

Who Builds Speed Queen

Alliance Laundry Systems in Ripon, Wisconsin builds Speed Queen, along with Huebsch, UniMac, IPSO and Primus. That matters at the dealer counter and on the used market, because the Huebsch vended hardmount is the same machine with a different badge and a Galaxy control in place of Quantum. Huebsch spec sheet AH20-0108 lists HCT020 through HCT100 with the same cylinder diameters and the same door openings as the Speed Queen SC line, size for size.

The Three Washer Platforms

Alliance's laundromat pages and spec sheets describe the three platforms this way. Capacities, controls and extraction come from speedqueencommercial.com, brochure AC18-0008 (hardmount), spec sheet AC19-0215 (softmount) and the 2019 front-load press release.

The hardmount is the laundromat default. It bolts to the slab, spins to 200 G on Quantum Gold or Touch, and carries a 10-year seals-and-bearings warranty with a 5-year limited warranty on the current models. The softmount rides on its own suspension, spins to 400 G, and is sold only with Quantum Touch, with a 3-year limited warranty plus 5 years on frame, cylinder, shaft, seals and bearings.

The front-load is the small-load machine. Alliance's 2019 redesign gave it a 20% larger washtub, a 440 G final spin, a 180-degree door swing and a 30% larger coin box. Dealer listings show it as SFNNCASP116TW01 with Quantum Gold at 3.42 cu ft, or SFNNCASP118TW01 with Quantum Gold Pro. Hardmount Sizes, Door Openings and Model Numbers

The numbers below are from Alliance brochure AC18-0008. Door opening is the clear hole a customer reaches through, not the outer door trim. The SC40 and SC60 share a 16.3-inch door, and the SC80 and SC100 share an 18.5-inch door, which is why a 60 lb machine looks smaller than it is from the aisle.

Width is what limits most floors. Six SC30s take 174 inches of wall before clearance; six SC40s take 183.6 inches. The SC20 through SC100 size comparison puts cylinder volume, door-bottom height and footprint side by side and tells you which kit and label size fits each door.

Model numbers are where dealers and Alliance diverge. Alliance's product pages print SC020, SC030, SC040, SC060, SC080 and SC100. Used listings show SCN030 for Quantum-era 30 lb machines, Coin-O-Matic's spec sheet DL-AM19-0088 lists SCT030 for a Quantum Touch unit, and an Australian dealer lists SCA020. Alliance publishes no key to that third letter, so treat it as dealer usage until you see it on a model list. Hardmount or Softmount

The frame decision comes before the size decision, because it's set by your building. A hardmount transfers extraction force into the concrete it's bolted to, so it needs a ground-floor slab your installer signs off on. A softmount absorbs that force in its own suspension, which is why it's the answer for second floors, mezzanines and any slab that can't be drilled.

You pay for that freedom twice. A reseller guide puts softmount at roughly 30% more than the equivalent hardmount; Alliance publishes no list price for either. The softmount is also bigger and heavier: spec sheet AC19-0215 lists the SYT030 at 31.29 × 36.81 × 49.02 inches and 563 lb, against 29 × 35.3 × 45 inches and 440 lb for the SC30. What you get back is 400 G extraction instead of 200 G, which sends wetter loads out of the washer less often and shortens dryer time. Alliance doesn't publish a minutes-saved figure, so measure it on your own dryers before you build a business case on it.

Quantum Gold vs Quantum Touch

On hardmount washers and tumble dryers you choose between two controls. Quantum Touch is the 7-inch full-color touchscreen: 3 basic cycles, 1 custom cycle, 3 basic temperature options, 30-plus languages and a Speed Cycle. Quantum Gold is the button-and-display control with 18 total cycles and 2 cycle modifiers. Both carry Automatic Dispenser Flush, Break-In Alarm and Drop-Off Mode. Softmount is Touch only, so the choice exists only on the hardmount line and the dryers.

The warranty is the part dealers skip. Alliance's stack dryer page lists Quantum Touch with a 5-year limited warranty and Quantum Gold with a 3-year limited warranty, and a Speed Queen dealer describes the Touch premium the same way: Touch costs more, carries 5 years on parts instead of 3, gets the chromed door and different front panels, and bolts to the same connections as a Gold machine. Programming is the other difference you'll live with. The Four-Compartment Dispenser

Brochure AC18-0008 lists a Four Compartment Dispenser as standard on every SC hardmount, and the 2019 front-load release names the same four functions: pre-wash detergent, wash detergent, bleach and fabric softener. On the hardmount the dispenser is a top hopper with a lid. Standing in front of the machine looking down, the layout on the machines we've labeled is pre-wash detergent front left, main wash detergent front right, softener back left, and a liquid-only detergent or bleach compartment back right. Nothing on the machine says which is which, and that's where the trouble starts.

Customers put pods in the hopper, fill the softener cup with detergent, and pour powder into a compartment meant for liquid. Automatic Dispenser Flush is listed on both Quantum controls, and Alliance's page names the feature without explaining what it clears. Error Codes You'll See

Alliance's official code list on the Insights help center covers top-load washers; the Quantum and Galaxy washer-extractor list comes from distributor National Laundry Equipment, which cites the same Alliance help centers. Door lock errors are the ones most often misread, because the top search results describe residential Speed Queen machines. What a Speed Queen Washer Costs

Alliance publishes no MSRP, and authorized dealers list every model as "Call for Pricing." What you can see in public are reseller estimates and used listings. A reseller guide puts a 25 lb commercial washer from about $5,000 and a 60 lb at $10,000 to $20,000 or more; treat those as estimates from a reseller with its own washers to sell. On the rebuilt market, Midwest Laundries listed a 2017 SCN030 30 lb at $3,600 with a 3-month parts and 1-year bearing warranty, and an eBay listing showed an SC30 at $3,000.

Two premiums stack on the base price: Touch over Gold, and softmount over hardmount at roughly 30% by the reseller estimate above. Which Speed Queen Belongs on Your Floor

Start from the building. A ground-floor slab points you to SC hardmounts; anything else points you to SYT softmounts and you skip the control decision because Touch is the only option. Then pick sizes by the door table, not by capacity alone: an SC40 and an SC60 share the same door and nearly the same width, so a 60 lb often costs little more in floor space. Before you sign, ask the dealer for a written quote that lists the full model number for each machine, both Gold and Touch, so the delta is on paper and the model list matches the door openings you planned around.
