Laundromat Peak Hours: How to Manage High Traffic

Peak hours are when your laundromat makes most of its revenue — and when customer experience is most at risk. A full house means longer waits, messier conditions, and more potential conflicts. Here's how to manage the rush.

Identify Your Peaks

Track machine usage by hour for 2-4 weeks. Most laundromats peak on weekends (Saturday morning is typically the busiest), evenings on weekdays, and the first and fifteenth of the month. Knowing exactly when your peaks hit lets you staff and prepare accordingly.

Staffing for Peaks

Schedule your best attendant during peak hours. This isn't the time for the new hire. Peak-hours attendants need to be fast, friendly, and good at de-escalating. If you typically run with one attendant, consider adding a second during your top 3-4 peak periods each week.

Pre-Peak Preparation

30 minutes before a predictable peak: clean all machines, empty soap trays, mop floors, stock supplies, empty all trash cans, and make sure every cart is in the staging area. Starting a peak period with a clean, fully stocked laundromat dramatically reduces mid-rush problems.

Machine Turnover

During peaks, unattended loads sitting in finished machines create bottlenecks. Post a clear policy (our laundromat signage and carts guide covers wording and placement): "Loads left in machines after the cycle ends may be moved to a folding table." Provide clean baskets on top of machines for this purpose. Most customers accept this policy when it's clearly communicated.

Cart Management

During peak hours, cart availability becomes critical. If you track carts with AirTags, do a quick count before the rush. Remind customers to return carts to the staging area when finished. Having enough carts for peak demand prevents a common source of customer frustration.

Off-Peak Incentives

Consider offering a discount during slow periods to shift some demand away from peaks. "Wash for $0.50 less, Tuesday through Thursday before noon" can redistribute traffic. This only works if you can communicate it effectively — signage, social media, and loyalty card messaging all help.
