How to Track Laundry Carts with Apple AirTags
Apple AirTags are the most practical tracking solution for laundromat carts. They're affordable, require no monthly subscription, and leverage Apple's massive Find My network for real-time location tracking.
What You Need
- Apple AirTags ($25 each)
- Tamper-resistant AirTag holders with security screws
- An iPhone or iPad to set up and track
How It Works
Each AirTag broadcasts a Bluetooth signal that's picked up by any nearby Apple device. When a cart with an AirTag leaves your laundromat, any iPhone in the area anonymously relays the AirTag's location to Apple's Find My network. You can see the cart's location on a map from your phone.
Installation
- Pre-drill two pilot holes on the cart frame where you want to mount the holder
- Place the AirTag into the holder — lid first, then snap the base closed
- Secure with the included security screws using the provided security bit
- Snap the caps over the screw holes to conceal the fasteners
Total install time: about 2 minutes per holder.
Best Mounting Locations
Mount holders in discreet spots — under the handle bar or along the bottom rail of the cart frame. The less visible, the less likely someone is to tamper with it.
What to Do When a Cart Goes Missing
- Open the Find My app on your iPhone
- Locate the AirTag on the map
- If it's nearby (within a block or two), consider walking over to retrieve it
- If it's farther away, you have location data to share with local authorities if needed
Cost Analysis
A 4-pack of AirTag holders plus 4 AirTags costs about $130 total. That's less than the cost of replacing a single stolen cart ($150-$300). The math is clear — tracking pays for itself after preventing one theft.
