How to Build a Laundromat Loyalty Program
A loyalty program gives customers a reason to choose your laundromat over competitors — even when competitors are closer or cheaper. Here's how to build one that actually works.
Keep It Simple
The best loyalty programs are dead simple: use our laundromat X times, get a free wash. A punch card with 10 squares — one punch per visit, 10th wash free — is easy to understand, easy to administer, and effective. Don't overcomplicate it with tiers, points, or apps unless you have the infrastructure to support them.
Physical Cards Work
For laundromats, physical punch cards outperform digital programs. Your customer base includes people who may not have smartphones or may not want another app. A physical card in their wallet is visible and tangible. Print professional cards with your branding, contact info, and clear instructions. Display them in a wall-mounted card holder near the entrance.
What to Offer
Free wash (standard size) after 10 visits is the most common reward. Alternatives: a free dryer cycle, a free wash-and-fold load, or a discount on a large/jumbo machine. The reward should be valuable enough to motivate but not so expensive that it erodes your margins significantly.
Staff Training
Train attendants to offer a loyalty card to every new customer and to punch cards consistently, the same way you'd hold them to any other daily expectation. The program only works if it's consistently applied. Post a reminder near the register or coin machine: "Ask every customer about the loyalty card." Where that sign and the customer-facing ones belong is covered in our laundromat signage and carts guide.
Tracking ROI
Track how many loyalty cards are redeemed monthly. If you give away 20 free washes per month at a cost of $3 each ($60 total), but those customers visit 10 times each generating $30-$80 per customer, the math works overwhelmingly in your favor.
Referral Bonus
Add a referral component: if a customer brings a friend who signs up for the loyalty program, both get an extra punch. This turns your customers into marketers. Word-of-mouth is the most effective advertising channel for local businesses, and it's the cheapest item in a laundromat marketing budget.
