How to Manage Laundromat Attendants Effectively

Good attendants make a laundromat run smoothly. Bad ones drive customers away. Here's how to hire, train, and manage attendants who elevate your operation.

Hiring the Right People

Look for reliability over experience. Laundromat tasks can be taught in a day — showing up on time and caring about cleanliness can't. Ask candidates about their transportation (reliable commute reduces call-outs), availability during your busiest hours, and comfort level working independently. A trial shift is worth more than any interview question.

Training That Sticks

Create a simple training checklist covering: opening/closing procedures, cleaning routine (including soap tray maintenance), how to handle machine malfunctions, customer interaction basics, and emergency contacts. Walk through each item physically — don't just hand them a document. Have them shadow for 2-3 shifts before working solo.

Clear Daily Expectations

Post a daily task list in the back room. Morning: sweep, mop, wipe machines, clean soap trays, stock supplies. Throughout the day: monitor machines, address customer questions, keep folding tables clear. Closing: final sweep, secure coin boxes, lock up. When expectations are written down, there's no ambiguity about what's required.

Accountability Without Micromanagement

Use cameras to spot-check, not to monitor every minute. Check in with a quick call or text mid-shift. Review the cleaning checklist at each visit. Focus on outcomes — is the laundromat clean? Are customers being helped? Are machines being reported when they malfunction? If the outcomes are right, the details usually are too.

Retention

Good attendants are hard to replace. Pay fairly, be flexible with scheduling when possible, and show appreciation. A small bonus for perfect attendance or a gas card goes a long way. The cost of turnover — hiring, training, customer disruption — is always higher than the cost of keeping a good employee.
