How to Create SOPs for Your Laundromat Staff

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are the difference between a laundromat that runs smoothly without you and one that falls apart when you're not there. Here's how to create SOPs that your staff will actually follow.

Why SOPs Matter

Without written procedures, your operation depends entirely on verbal training and individual memory. When an attendant quits or a new hire starts, institutional knowledge walks out the door. SOPs capture your standards in writing so quality doesn't depend on any single person.

What to Document

Start with the essentials: opening procedures, closing procedures, daily cleaning checklist, machine malfunction response, customer complaint handling, cash handling and coin collection, emergency procedures, and maintenance routines (including soap tray cleaning schedule). Each SOP should be one page — if it's longer, split it into separate documents.

How to Write Them

Use numbered steps with simple language. Assume the reader has never done the task before. Include specific details: "Mop the floor with the blue mop and Clean Master solution mixed at 2 oz per gallon" is better than "Clean the floor." Add photos if possible — a picture of a properly cleaned soap tray is worth a paragraph of description.

Format for Lamination

Print SOPs on single pages and laminate them, the same treatment our laundromat signage and carts guide recommends for customer-facing signs. Post each SOP where the task happens: cleaning SOP near the supply closet, machine malfunction SOP near the utility room, cash handling SOP near the coin counter. Laminated pages survive the humidity, splashes, and handling that laundromat documents encounter daily.

Training with SOPs

Walk new hires through each SOP physically — don't just hand them a stack of papers (more on that in our attendant management post). Have them perform each task while reading the SOP. After training, they can reference the posted SOPs whenever they need a refresher.

Updating SOPs

Review SOPs quarterly. If you've changed a procedure, update the document. If your staff consistently does something differently from the SOP, either retrain them or update the SOP to reflect the better method. SOPs should describe how things actually work, not how you wish they worked.
