Laundromat Signage Best Practices: What to Post and Where
Signage is your most underrated employee. Good signage works 24/7, never calls out sick, and handles the most repetitive customer questions without complaint. Here's how to get it right.
Exterior Signage
Your exterior sign should be visible from the street at driving speed. Include your business name, "Laundromat" or "Self-Service Laundry" (for customers who don't know your brand name), and operating hours. If you offer wash-and-fold, add that too — it's a differentiator. Illuminated signs are essential for evening visibility.
Entrance Area
Post operating hours on the door, and in California a No Smoking sign at each entrance, the one sign state law actually requires (Labor Code §6404.5); our laundromat signage and carts guide covers what else is required and what isn't. Inside the entrance, display a welcome sign with basic rules, a phone number for issues, and any current promotions. Wall-mounted card holders in this area are perfect for business cards, wash-and-fold pricing cards, and loyalty program information.
Machine Instructions
Every machine needs clear instructions. At minimum: cycle selection guidance, payment instructions, and soap tray labels. Color-coded soap tray organizer kits with bilingual labels handle the tray labeling — the most impactful piece of per-machine signage you can install.
Pricing
Display pricing prominently, grouped by machine size. Use large, clear font. Post pricing near the entrance and repeated near each machine group. If your pricing varies by machine size, make sure customers can identify which size they're using.
Rules and Policies
Post rules in a positive tone where possible. "Please remove clothes promptly so others can use the machines" reads better than "Clothes left in machines will be removed." Include: last load time, no dyeing, proper detergent use, and how to report machine issues. Make all rule signage bilingual if you serve a diverse community; our bilingual signage guide covers what to translate first.
What Not to Post
Avoid handwritten signs — they look unprofessional and become permanent fixtures. Remove outdated promotions promptly. Don't clutter walls with too many signs — prioritize the messages that prevent the most common problems. If you have 15 signs, customers read none of them.
