How to Manage a Laundromat Remotely
Many laundromat owners don't live near their locations — and even those who do can't be on-site all day. Remote management is becoming the norm. Here's how to set it up effectively.
Cloud-Connected Cameras
This is the foundation of remote management. Install cameras covering all key areas: entrances, main floor, coin/payment areas, and utility room. Cloud systems let you view live feeds and recorded footage from your phone. Most systems offer motion alerts, so you get notified of after-hours activity. Budget for a commercial-grade system rather than consumer cameras; cost scales with camera count and cloud storage.
Smart Payment Systems
Digital payment systems (card-based or app-based) provide real-time revenue data. You can see how many cycles each machine runs, daily revenue by machine, and transaction history — all from your phone. This eliminates the need for physical coin counting visits.
Machine Monitoring
Some newer commercial washers and dryers offer IoT connectivity with remote diagnostics, which is worth weighing when you compare brands in our laundromat equipment buying guide. Speed Queen's Insights platform (on Quantum Touch and Quantum Gold controls) and Dexter's DexterLive platform let you monitor machine status, error codes, and cycle counts remotely. For older machines, aftermarket monitoring systems can add basic connectivity.
Attendant Communication
Set up a simple communication system with your attendants. A shared messaging app (WhatsApp group, Slack channel) works well. Attendants can send photos of issues, report machine problems, and confirm task completion. Require a daily check-in with a photo of the completed cleaning checklist.
Automated Alerts
Set up alerts for: security camera motion during closed hours, payment system errors, water leak sensors (install under machines and near water heaters), and temperature/humidity sensors. These catch problems early — often before they become expensive emergencies.
Cart Tracking
AirTags on laundry carts provide passive tracking data (more on keeping your carts on-site in our signage and carts guide). Check the Find My app periodically to verify all carts are on-site. If one goes missing, you can recover it without an on-site visit by using the location data.
The Limits of Remote
Remote management works for monitoring and troubleshooting, but it can't replace physical presence entirely. Plan to visit each location at least twice a month for hands-on inspection, especially once you're running more than one location. Some things — a subtle smell, a loose door handle, a gradual decline in cleanliness — only show up in person.
