Dexter Washer Soap Tray Installation: Common Mistakes to Avoid

Installing a Dexter soap tray kit is straightforward — but there are a few common mistakes that can cause problems after installation. Here's what to watch for and how to avoid each one.

Mistake 1: Skipping the Cleaning Step

The most common error is dropping a new liner into a dirty tray. Old detergent buildup under the liner creates an uneven surface, which can shift the liner out of position during use. Always clean the tray thoroughly before installing the liner, as in step 2 of the Dexter kit install walkthrough. Ten minutes with warm water and a stiff brush removes most buildup; the hopper stays on the machine, so scrub it in place.

Mistake 2: Wrong Liner Orientation

Liners are molded to match the three-compartment hopper layout shared across the T-300, T-400 and T-600 (see our Dexter T-series guide). There's a correct orientation — the compartments need to line up exactly. If the liner feels like it doesn't fit or sits unevenly, try rotating it 180 degrees. It should drop in smoothly with no gaps.

Mistake 3: Label Placement Out of Sight

A label stuck inside the hopper is hidden once the lid is closed. Position the label on the hopper lid, where it faces the customer as they look down into the open dispenser. Customers should see the label before they pour, not after.

Mistake 4: Not Testing the Lid

After installing the liner and label, close and open the hopper lid several times. If the lid won't sit flat, the liner is slightly misaligned. Lift the liner, reseat it, and try again. A liner that rides high blocks the flush and may cause dispensing issues.

Mistake 5: Mixing Up Machine Brands

If you have a mixed fleet (Dexter and Speed Queen, for example), make sure each machine gets the correct brand-specific liner. They're not interchangeable — dimensions differ between brands. Label your liner inventory by brand to prevent mix-ups during fleet installations.

Mistake 6: Not Replacing Worn Liners

Liners are designed to be replaced periodically; check them during the dispenser cleaning on our Dexter washer maintenance checklist. When buildup accumulates on the liner itself, swap it for a new one rather than scrubbing aggressively. The liner is protecting the tray — let it do its job and replace it when it's spent.
