Should You Offer Free Wi-Fi at Your Laundromat?

Free Wi-Fi has become an expected amenity in many businesses. For laundromats, where customers spend 60-90 minutes waiting, it can be a meaningful differentiator. But is it worth the cost and effort?

The Case For

Customers who have Wi-Fi are more likely to wait on-site rather than leaving and returning. On-site customers are more likely to use dryers, buy vending items, and start additional loads. They're also less likely to leave clothes unattended in machines, which reduces the "someone moved my clothes" complaints. In competitive markets, Wi-Fi can be the tiebreaker between you and the laundromat down the street.

The Case Against

Wi-Fi costs $50-$100/month for a business-grade connection. There's also the setup cost for a commercial access point ($200-$500) and the occasional troubleshooting headache. If your laundromat is in a low-competition area where customers have no alternatives, Wi-Fi may not change behavior enough to justify the cost.

Setup Best Practices

Use a separate network from any business systems. A guest network with a simple password (posted on your signage) or an open network with a captive portal (where customers see your branding before connecting) both work. Use a commercial-grade access point — consumer routers struggle once a room full of customers connects at the same time.

The Marketing Angle

Free Wi-Fi is a marketing asset. List it as an amenity on your Google Business Profile. Post the Wi-Fi password on professional signage near the seating area. Mention it in your social media posts. For some customers, especially those working remotely or students studying, Wi-Fi transforms your laundromat from a chore destination into a usable workspace.

The Verdict

For laundromats in competitive markets or serving younger demographics, Wi-Fi is worth the investment. For rural or low-competition locations, it's optional. If you're on the fence, try it for 3 months and track whether customer dwell time and secondary spending (vending, additional loads) increase.
