How to Train Your Laundromat Staff on Equipment Maintenance

Your attendants are your first line of maintenance defense. When they can identify and address basic issues, you reduce service calls, minimize downtime, and extend equipment life. Here's what to train them on.

What Attendants Should Handle

Daily lint trap cleaning, soap tray pull-and-clean, visual inspection for leaks, drain filter clearing, machine releveling, hose connection tightening, and basic error code identification. These tasks don't require technical expertise — just training and consistency.

What Attendants Should NOT Handle

Electrical work, gas connections, bearing replacement, motor repair, and anything that requires opening the machine's back or side panels. Draw a clear line: if it requires a tool beyond a basic wrench or screwdriver, call the technician and follow the breakdown response plan so customers are handled while the machine is down.

Training Method

Don't just explain — demonstrate. For each maintenance task: perform it yourself while the attendant watches, then have the attendant perform it while you watch and coach. Repeat until they're comfortable. Create a laminated step-by-step guide for each task and post it in the utility area.

Soap Tray Maintenance Training

This is the most frequently performed maintenance task. Train attendants on: pulling the tray (each brand has a slightly different release), soaking and scrubbing channels, inspecting and replacing soap tray liners when worn, and properly reseating the tray. A 15-minute training session covers this completely.

Error Code Reference

Create a simple reference sheet with the 5 most common error codes for your machines and the first-response action for each. Example: "E:FL (fill error on Speed Queen and Huebsch) → Check: water supply valve open? Inlet hose kinked? Inlet screen clogged?" Post this in the utility room so attendants can troubleshoot before calling you or a technician, and build the sheet from our commercial washer troubleshooting guide, which lists the codes by brand.

Accountability

Create a maintenance checklist with daily, weekly, and monthly tasks. Attendants date and initial each completed task. Review the checklist during your visits. This creates both accountability and a maintenance record you can reference when troubleshooting recurring issues.
