How to Improve Laundromat Hygiene and Cleanliness Standards

A clean laundromat isn't just nice to have — it's your most important competitive advantage. Customers choose where to wash their clothes based largely on perceived cleanliness. Here's how to set and maintain high standards.

Daily Cleaning Routine

Every day, before peak hours: sweep and mop all floors, wipe down folding tables and surfaces, clean soap trays on all machines, empty trash cans, and clean restrooms. This should take one attendant 60-90 minutes. It's non-negotiable.

Machine Hygiene

Washer drums should be run through a cleaning cycle weekly — empty, hot water, with a commercial washer cleaner or white vinegar. Soap trays should be pulled, rinsed, and wiped down at least weekly. Color-coded soap tray liners make this easier: when the liner gets dirty, swap it out instead of scrubbing the tray itself.

High-Touch Surfaces

Door handles, folding table edges, coin slot areas, and cart handles are high-touch surfaces that should be wiped with disinfectant multiple times per day during busy periods. This is both a hygiene measure and a visible signal to customers that you take cleanliness seriously.

Odor Management

Laundromats can develop a musty smell from damp environments and chemical residue. Adequate ventilation is the first fix — make sure exhaust systems are working properly. Leave washer doors ajar between uses to prevent mildew. Address any standing water immediately.

Visual Standards

Cleanliness is partly perception. Bright lighting makes a space feel cleaner. Organized machines with labeled soap trays look more professional than machines with sticky, unlabeled dispensers. Wall-mounted card holders and professional signage reinforce the impression of a well-managed operation.

Accountability

Create a cleaning checklist and have attendants sign off on each task. Post the checklist in the back room. This creates accountability and ensures nothing gets skipped, especially on busy days or during shift changes.
