How to Choose the Right Detergent for Your Commercial Washers

The detergent you use in your commercial washers affects wash quality, machine longevity, and customer satisfaction. For wash-and-fold operations, detergent choice is a business decision. For self-service, it's about ensuring customers can use any common detergent without causing machine issues, and knowing which compartment takes what on each brand (our soap dispenser guide by brand maps them).

Liquid vs. Powder

Most commercial front-load dispensers take liquid or powder: Dexter's T-300 manual calls for low-sudsing powder in the detergent compartment, while the Speed Queen and Huebsch hopper has one liquid-only compartment. Powder can work but tends to leave residue in soap tray channels, especially in cold water cycles. If your customers primarily use powder, expect more frequent tray cleaning. Soap tray liners help protect the tray from powder buildup — but liquid still leaves the least residue.

HE (High Efficiency) Detergent

High-efficiency front-load washers work best with HE detergent; Alliance's manual allows regular detergent at half the recommended dose. Too much regular detergent creates excess suds in HE machines, triggering extended rinse cycles and slow draining. Commercial Speed Queen and Huebsch controls have no suds code; what you'll see instead is a slow-drain or drain error (E Sd or E:dr). Post clear signage on every machine: "HE Detergent Recommended." The color-coded soap tray labels help, but a separate HE notice reinforces the message.

For Wash-and-Fold Operations

Buy detergent in bulk from a commercial supplier. Choose a fragrance-free or light-fragrance option — you don't know customer scent preferences, and heavy fragrances generate complaints. Cost per load should be under $0.30 for detergent when buying in bulk. Factor this into your per-pound pricing.

Water Hardness

Hard water reduces detergent effectiveness and causes mineral buildup in machines. If your water is hard (over 120 ppm), use a detergent formulated for hard water or add a water softening agent. Consider installing a commercial water softener — it extends machine life and improves wash quality.

Customer Detergent Vending

Stock your detergent vending machine with single-use pods or liquid packets from recognizable brands. Customers trust name brands. Price at $1.50-$2.50 per dose — this is a convenience purchase, not a value purchase. Ensure the vended products are HE-compatible if your machines require it.
