How to Add Detergent Dispensing Machines to Your Laundromat
Detergent vending machines are a reliable revenue stream that serves a genuine customer need. Every customer who forgot their detergent is a guaranteed sale. Here's how to add them to your operation.
Machine Types
Two main options: standalone vending machines that dispense pre-packaged single-use products, and wall-mounted dispensers that sell measured doses from bulk containers. Pre-packaged machines are simpler and require less maintenance. Bulk dispensers offer better margins but need regular cleaning and refilling.
Product Selection
Stock what your customers actually use: liquid detergent (most popular), bleach, and fabric softener. Single-use pods or packets are convenient for customers and easy to vend. Stock name-brand products — customers trust brands they recognize, and if your washers are HE, keep the vended doses HE-compatible (see how to choose detergent for commercial washers). Add dryer sheets as a secondary item.
Pricing
Price detergent vending at $1.50-$2.50 per single-use dose. This is competitive with convenience store pricing while offering the convenience of in-laundromat availability. Your cost per dose from bulk is typically $0.20-$0.50, so margins are strong.
Placement
Position the dispenser near the washer area — customers need detergent before they start a load, not after. If possible, place it near the entrance so customers see it on the way in. Good placement sells noticeably more than a corner spot; track the difference if you move it.
Supplier Options
Some chemical suppliers will provide dispensing equipment for free in exchange for an exclusive supply agreement. This eliminates your upfront equipment cost. The trade-off: you're locked into their products and pricing. Evaluate whether the no-cost equipment outweighs the loss of product flexibility.
Complementary to Soap Tray Organization
Detergent vending pairs well with organized soap trays, and with customers who know which compartment takes what on each brand (our soap dispenser guide by brand maps them). When customers know exactly where to pour (thanks to color-coded liners and labels), they're more confident using the dispensed product correctly. The two investments reinforce each other.
